The Origins of Ohmapi

When my daughter was just two years old, I noticed how much she thrived during our weekly visits to the vast, wild regional park near our home. Being out in nature made her shine in ways unlike any other. She wanted more time in nature and so did I.

I invited a few other moms to join us on our nature visits, with the intention that we would do more than talk while the kids played.  We told stories, drank tea, played games, and made crafts.  As my daughter neared kindergarten, I realized I needed to figure out a way to let her stay outdoors and still learn to read and write and do arithmetic.  I wanted her to gain all the essential academic skills while in nature in a way that was hands-on, joyful, and rooted in the natural world.  Thus, The Ohmapi Nature Project was born.

Since those early days in 2013, Ohmapi has grown and evolved.  With each new year, the meeting times grew longer, and more frequent. Over time, Ohmapi expanded from 6 kids to 36, from one teacher to four; from one grade to grades 1 through 8.

And now, with The Ohmapi Store, families around the world can bring a bit of the Ohmapi way into their lives with our curriculum, kits and gear. You too can Learn Through Nature While in Nature!
